SSC CGL 2026: Exam Pattern, Syllabus & Preparation Strategy

The Staff Selection Commission's Combined Graduate Level (CGL) exam remains the single biggest gateway to Group B and Group C posts across central government departments. If SSC CGL 2026 is your target, understanding the pattern before you touch a single question is half the battle.

Tier-1 pattern at a glance

SSC CGL Tier-1 is a 100-question, 200-mark computer-based test held over 60 minutes, split equally across four sections — General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension. Each section carries 25 questions worth 50 marks, and there is a 0.50 negative marking for every wrong answer.

The Commission has introduced sectional timing, so you get a fixed window per subject. This rewards candidates who have trained with sectional-timing mocks rather than a single 60-minute block.

How to build your prep

Start with Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning — they are the most scoring and most trainable. Layer daily current affairs and static GK on top from day one, because General Awareness is where most aspirants leave marks on the table.
